JR "Jim" Coffman
J. R. "Jim" Coffman is an Eastern Kansas native and a veterinarian. Always heavily involved with horses and other animals, many of his paintings include figures and animals. Coffman drew from an early age and began painting, when time allowed, in the mid-1970s. Following retirement, he began painting seriously. Mostly self-taught, Coffman has benefitted immensely from
mentoring and teaching by Oscar Larmer in Manhattan, KS, and Richard Alan Nichols in Taos, NM. Coffman paints landscapes of northern New Mexico and the Kansas Flint Hills, often including architecture, animals, and figures. More recently, he has developed an emphasis on Native Americans and their horses in a unique non-traditional style.
Coffman and his wife, Sharon, shuttle back and forth between Taos, NM, the Sangre de Christo mountains, and Manhattan, KS, north of the scenic Flint Hills. He has exhibited in Taos in the Taos Fall Arts Festival and other venues with the Taos Plein Air Society, including the Blumenschein Museum. In Kansas, he exhibits at Strecker-Nelson- West Gallery and the Manhattan Arts Center in Manhattan as well as the Columbia Theatre Swogger Gallery in Wamego, KS. Coffman is a member of the Taos Artist Organization, the Taos Plein Air Society, and the Columbian Artist Group.
